Two enforcement officers stationed at the Malaysian Embassy in Bangladesh have been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on suspicion of accepting bribes in exchange for issuing foreign visas and allowing entry of tourists and workers from Bangladesh into Malaysia.
Malaysian embassy officers ARRESTED
The male and female embassy officers have been remanded for three days, following the MACC’s request for a remand order. The MACC has discovered several suspicious transactions of money being deposited into the suspects’ bank accounts, and they have been instructed to return to Malaysia to assist in the investigation. Over 20 bank accounts associated with individuals and related companies have been frozen, and eight plots of land estimated to be worth around RM3.1 million have been seized.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrests and stated that investigations are being conducted under relevant sections of the MACC Act and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act. Further arrests may be made, and the MACC is seeking an individual named Siti Liyana Sakijan to assist in the investigation. Anyone with information about her is requested to contact the investigating officer.
