Melaka Rural Development, agriculture and Food Security Committee chairman Dr Akmal Saleh says the government should restrict the purchase of local rice to Malaysians only. However, Azman Mahmood, of the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry’s Padi and Rice regulatory division, says Akmal’s suggestion was good but impractical as it would require businesses to determine their customers’ citizenship. “Show me your IC if you want to buy local beras,” the shopkeepers may ask soon. If you have a passport, you are not allowed to buy the beras tempatan. What about banning all foreigners from buying Malaysia-made goods? LOL
