The government has announced a 50% toll discount for two days, from 6 to 7 November, to mark Deepavali this Sunday. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said in a statement that it starts at midnight on Friday and ends at 11.59pm the next day.
The discount is estimated to cost RM20.11 million in compensation to the highway concession companies, which the government will bear, subject to verification of traffic data.
Deepavali Toll Discount Applies to Class 1 Private Vehicles Nationwide
It covers Class 1 private vehicles at all toll plazas, plus Class 2 vehicles on the Penang Bridge. It does not apply at the border toll plazas, which are the Sultan Iskandar Building Plaza (BSI) on the North-South Expressway, Tanjung Kupang Plaza and the Linkedua expressway.
Nanta said the move shows the MADANI government’s care for people of all races and religions, and aims to ease travel costs, especially for Hindus returning home or visiting family. The Malaysian Highway Authority will coordinate with concessionaires.
He advised motorists to plan ahead to avoid congestion, make sure their Touch ‘n Go or eWallet balance is sufficient, observe speed limits, keep a safe distance and rest enough.
He also urged them to check traffic updates on official highway authority channels, and wished Hindus a happy Deepavali.
