The Court of Appeal today reduced damages awarded to the family of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu from RM5 million to RM1.38 million in their civil suit against former political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda and two ex‑policemen over her 2006 murder.

A three‑judge panel led by Chief Judge of Malaya Datuk Hashim Hamzah ruled the earlier award was largely vindicatory rather than based on dependency loss.
The court granted RM384,000 for proven dependency and RM1 million for the “outrageous and barbaric” nature of the killing. It also held the government was not vicariously liable, as the officers were not on official duty.
