WROCLAW, Aug 16, 2026 – Manchester United ended their six‑match pre‑season with a 4‑2 defeat to AC Milan, despite twice taking the lead. The result leaves manager Michael Carrick with defensive concerns ahead of next week’s Premier League opener at Hull City.
United welcomed back Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, and Lisandro Martinez, while skipper Bruno Fernandes and new signing Youri Tielemans completed the full 90 minutes. Rashford’s appearance was his first for United since December 2024, following loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona.

Milan beats United
Milan, led by former United boss Ruben Amorim, capitalised on gaps in United’s defence, scoring three close‑range goals before Ruben Loftus‑Cheek sealed the win with a breakaway strike. Carrick admitted his side “didn’t play very well” and offered “no excuses” for the performance.
Despite positives in fitness and squad depth, United’s defensive frailties were exposed, particularly when Milan switched play to the right flank. New signing Andrey Santos also showed signs of inexperience.
Carrick now faces the task of tightening his back line before the season begins, with United officials clarifying Rashford’s number nine shirt in Poland was not permanent.
