Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said continued engagement with Myanmar is necessary to address the refugee issue, which has persisted for decades and become increasingly complex.
He said diplomatic relations and negotiations remain important, particularly as the number of refugees continues to rise. Malaysia will continue using diplomatic channels to discuss possible solutions with the Myanmar authorities.
Malaysia to Maintain Diplomatic Engagement Over Myanmar Refugee Issue
Anwar said the issue cannot be addressed simply by expecting host countries to continue accepting increasing numbers of refugees without pursuing a longer-term solution.
He rejected claims that Malaysia was only focused on sending refugees home, stressing that discussions with relevant authorities remain central to finding a resolution.
The Prime Minister’s comments came as Malaysia continues efforts to manage the long-running refugee situation.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail separately said 5,000 Myanmar refugees had been identified for voluntary and phased repatriation, with the first 1,476 beginning the process based on a list submitted by Myanmar through an official diplomatic note.
