BANGKOK, Sept 28, 2026 – Heavy rains have left parts of Bangkok under deep floodwaters, forcing nearly 4,900 residents into temporary shelters and affecting more than 52,000 households, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

Markets, roads and homes were inundated after more than 330 millimetres of rain fell between Thursday and Sunday. Pedestrians waded through knee‑deep water in plastic ponchos, some floating belongings in tubs, while others used small boats to navigate submerged streets.

At a school gymnasium converted into a shelter, evacuees rested under mosquito‑net tents. “I came with only one shirt. It would be great if I can get another,” said Sunaporn Thongphajuti, a grocery store worker. Teacher Namphet Chanjuingtavorn, whose flat lost electricity and water, is now coordinating relief efforts at the site, where around 100 people sought food and safety.

Residents expressed frustration at late warnings, with office worker Bandit Pankan saying he received an SMS alert only after floodwaters had already entered his home.

The National Environment Agency reported smoke haze from fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra drifting towards Singapore, compounding regional weather challenges. Officials warned that dry conditions in southern Sumatra and Kalimantan could prolong the crisis.
