Malaysia, China Agree on Proposed ECRL Extension to Rantau Panjang

Malaysia and China have agreed on the proposed extension of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) from Kota Bharu to Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. The proposed extension is expected to boost economic activity in more remote areas of Kelantan while creating a direct rail connection between Malaysia and Thailand.

Anwar said further discussions with relevant stakeholders would be held before the proposal is brought to the Cabinet for consideration. He added that the proposal had received positive feedback from Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul during their discussions. The existing ECRL covers 665 kilometres, connecting the East Coast with Port Klang through 20 stations. 

The proposed extension would add another regional connection to the rail network while supporting greater movement of people and goods. Anwar made the announcement after concluding his three-day working visit to China, where he also held bilateral talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. The ECRL is being developed as a major cross-regional transport link across Peninsular Malaysia.
