Birds in France trained to pick up cigarette butts

1 min read

In 2018, France’s Puy du Fou theme park trained six intelligent crows to collect cigarette butts and small bits of rubbish in exchange for food rewards. The crows, part of an experiment to raise environmental awareness, were taught to associate litter with rewards. A clip shared by National Geographic shows the birds collecting trash and dropping it into a container. While not intended as cleaners, the park hopes the crows inspire people to avoid littering. Park spokesperson Nicolas de Villiers praised the initiative, highlighting how nature can teach humans to care for the environment through play and communication.
