HULL, Aug 23, 2026 – Manchester United’s season began in disarray as newly promoted Hull City secured their first-ever top-flight victory over the Red Devils, winning 2-0 at the MKM Stadium.
The home crowd revelled not only in the goals but also in a cruel announcement midway through the second half: two trains back to Manchester had been cancelled, leaving United’s travelling fans stranded. “You should have come in a taxi,” Hull supporters sang, adding to the misery of the 2,400 visiting contingent.
Man Utd DEMOLITION
United’s performance drew sharp criticism. Former striker Wayne Rooney told BBC Sport: “They didn’t create much, which was the biggest worry.” Alan Shearer added that United “didn’t look fit, didn’t look ready to play 90 minutes of high-energy football.”
Skipper Bruno Fernandes admitted familiar failings, saying: “Same mistakes as last season in every away game. We give too much of the ball, we need to press more aggressively.”
Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic revealed set-pieces were a targeted weakness, and his side duly capitalised. For manager Michael Carrick, the defeat echoed defensive frailties exposed in pre-season, raising questions about United’s readiness for the campaign.
