Chasing Felda or TH corruption probe won’t bring votes to PH

1 min read

PETALING JAYA, Aug 21 — Delivering tangible benefits to Felda settlers is a more strategic way to win Malay support than merely probing the agency for past mismanagement, analysts say.

An analyst notes that the government’s release of the Tabung Haji (TH) royal commission report before the Negeri Sembilan election failed to sway voters. “If the government only exposes what happened in the past and looks for parties to blame, the political impact may be limited,” the analyst said to a local daily. Instead, reforms that improve income, governance, and opportunities for second and third-generation settlers could build trust.

He added that such measures would show Pakatan Harapan’s reform agenda is not just for urban elites but also addresses rural Malay concerns.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s Mazlan Ali agreed, saying investigations into agencies like Felda and TH resonate more with middle-class Malays (M40 and T20) than with lower-income groups. “PH and PKR should focus on reforming Felda’s system, particularly where settlers feel their interests are not adequately protected,” he said.

Felda settlers face debt, high replanting costs, and land ownership issues, while governance concerns persist. Analysts argue reforms, not probes, will strengthen PH’s credibility among rural Malays.
