Starting November 1, the Malaysian government will discontinue subsidies and price controls on chicken, as announced by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. However, subsidies for grade A, B, and C eggs will continue following the existing mechanism.
The decision aligns with the government’s phased approach to subsidy restructuring. Notably, subsidies totaling RM3.8 billion have been allocated for chicken and egg costs up to February of this year. The move aims to reduce wastage of subsidies benefiting higher-income groups and non-Malaysians.
Netizens disagree with chicken subsidies ending
Netizens state that the government is worried about those in the T20 group and foreigners buying subsidised items. However, there are plenty of those B40 and M40 that still would need to rely on these subsidies. The user adds that if these subsidies are removed, then the best way is for the government to reduce taxes.
