The US Treasury Department may be forced to issue rebates if the Supreme Court upholds a ruling that President Donald Trump’s “reciprocal” tariffs exceeded his authority. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said refunds could cover half the tariffs, calling it a blow to government revenue.

The tariffs, imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, were ruled unlawful by a federal appeals court on August 29, though enforcement is delayed until October 14. 

The Trump administration has appealed to the Supreme Court, insisting tariffs are vital to trade leverage. Meanwhile, rising costs and slowing job growth highlight the policy’s economic strain.
