Born with a disability, Sophie grew up determined to prove her future would be defined by her abilities, not assumptions. Her perseverance led to 8As in SPM, a scholarship, and five years of independent study in Sydney, Australia, where she graduated in Pharmacy with outstanding results.
Returning to Malaysia, she sought only to serve as a pharmacist. On 11 May 2026, Sophie received an offer to join the Ministry of Health’s Graduate Pharmacy Training programme.
Disability Not a Barrier: Sophie Begins MOH Training
Days before reporting, her placement was abruptly put on hold pending a review of her disability status. Feeling her capabilities were being questioned, she travelled from Sabah to Putrajaya for answers, only to be told the matter would be handled over the phone
Her story gained attention when she and her uncle spoke out, prompting Mustapha Sakmud, Chairman of MPN Keadilan Sabah, to intervene. On 13 July, her placement was confirmed, and by 20 July she reported for duty at a hospital in Sabah with a monthly salary of RM3,500.
Sophie’s journey is a powerful reminder that determination and talent exist in every community, including among persons with disabilities.
