Everton beat Newcastle United 3-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday (Oct 29) to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, on a night when David Moyes left Jack Grealish out of his squad for disciplinary reasons, Sky Sports reported.
Everton beat Newcastle to reach last eight
James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry scored for the home side in the fourth-round tie. Dan Burn pulled one back for Newcastle late on, a goal Goal.com described as a consolation.
Tempers flared after Burn’s goal, with players from both sides involved in a tussle near the end, according to Sky Sports.
Everton were also without defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who the club said was following concussion protocols, Goal.com reported.
Grealish axed over discipline breach
Before kick-off, Everton announced on X that Grealish was unavailable for selection because of a breach of club discipline.
Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie said the Manchester City loanee had failed to turn up for a training session in the build-up to the cup tie. Goal.com, citing talkSPORT, said he was left out after an unauthorised absence from a recent training session.
The 31-year-old had also missed Everton’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to Arsenal last weekend, which the club put down to illness.
Moyes declined to go into detail after the match, calling the omission “a club decision” that he supported and saying the club should be approached for further information, Sky Sports reported.
Fleetwood next, then Newcastle again
Everton will travel to League Two side Fleetwood Town in the quarter-finals in December. Fleetwood knocked Arsenal out of the competition earlier in the week.
The two Premier League clubs meet again quickly, with Everton due at St James’ Park to face Newcastle in the league on Monday (Nov 2).
