Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil has instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to issue a statement clarifying Meta’s response to complaints involving hacked, blocked and deactivated WhatsApp accounts.
Fahmi said he had yet to receive an update on discussions between MCMC and Meta after the company was asked to respond to the complaints.
MCMC Asked to Explain Meta’s Response to WhatsApp Complaints
Fahmi said Meta had been given until 3pm on September 28 to submit its response to issues raised by MCMC. The commission had previously said it was reviewing complaints involving WhatsApp accounts that were reportedly hacked, blocked or rendered inaccessible before referring the cases to Meta for clarification and further action.
MCMC has also stressed that account takeovers and account blocking are separate matters. According to the commission, hacked accounts may subsequently be misused for scams, spam or other violations of WhatsApp’s terms of service, potentially resulting in the accounts being blocked.
Fahmi said the requested statement would provide greater clarity on Meta’s response and the action being taken.
