A father and his nine-year-old son were found dead after becoming trapped in a house fire at Kampung Tok Jembal, Kuala Nerus, early Wednesday.

The victims, identified as 40-year-old Amirul Fahmi Wan Jusoh and his son Rehan Yusuf Amirul Fahmi, were found together upstairs after the fire destroyed around 70 per cent of the two-storey home.

Amirul’s wife, Nur Izzah Ahmad, 36, had recently given birth to their second child, who is three months old.

She said her husband had planned to move the family to his mother’s home after her confinement period and had even asked her to take leave on Wednesday because their newborn was unwell.

Police received the emergency report at around 4am, while firefighters brought the blaze under control and fully extinguished it by 6.10am.

Sixteen firefighters and officers, supported by three fire engines, were involved in the operation. The cause of the fire and estimated losses remain under investigation by the Fire and Rescue Department.
