Zaid Warns of Poverty and Loan Sharks as Possible Factors of Kepong Tragedy

1 min read

The tragic deaths of four family members in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, have sparked calls for deeper government attention to social and economic pressures.

Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim urged authorities to look beyond corruption and focus on the welfare of vulnerable groups, warning that hardship may drive families to desperate acts.

Similar Family Tragedies Reported in Kuantan and Kulim

Police discovered the bodies of a couple and their two children — a nine‑year‑old girl and a seven‑year‑old boy — in a condominium at Desa ParkCity. I

Investigators believe the 48‑year‑old father fell from the unit, while his wife and children were found inside with severe neck injuries. A knife was recovered at the scene. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, while the father’s death is treated as sudden.

Zaid questioned whether poverty, debt, or loan sharks could have played a role, urging the Welfare Department to identify underlying causes.

He cited similar tragedies in Kuantan and Kulim, where financial hardship and emotional distress were suspected factors.

Authorities continue investigating, while the incident underscores the urgent need for stronger social safety nets and mental health support to prevent further tragedies.
