The Madani Government will not allow the long-running issue of foreign refugees to continue indefinitely and will address it in stages based on the Federal Constitution and rule of law, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said.
He said the government was taking a structured approach while balancing enforcement and the legal framework.
1,476 Myanmar Refugees Begin First Phase of Voluntary Repatriation
Saifuddin said 5,000 Myanmar refugees had been finalised for a voluntary and phased return to their country of origin, following agreement from Myanmar to receive them and the individuals’ consent to return.
He said 1,476 people began the first phase based on a list provided by Myanmar through an official diplomatic note.
The minister said the presence of foreign refugees, particularly those from Myanmar, had continued for decades without a comprehensive resolution and had created financial, social and security challenges for Malaysia.
The government’s approach involves addressing the issue progressively while ensuring the process is carried out according to applicable laws and official arrangements with the country of origin.
