Mohamed Hanipa Maidin, a former law minister, expressed skepticism about the perceived threat posed by the DAP to the status of Malays and Islam in Malaysia, following PAS’s Deepavali message that highlighted the triumph of light over darkness. He argued that with Malays comprising over 70% of the population, the fear of DAP undermining their position is unfounded. Hanipa pointed out that the declining birth rates among ethnic Chinese and Indians further diminish this supposed threat. He criticized the use of the Setapak Declaration from 1967 as an outdated tool for political gain, noting that it did not prevent PAS from collaborating with DAP. He urged PAS to translate its messages of unity into meaningful action and criticized their divisive politics, suggesting that true Islamic principles should embrace diversity rather than foster division.
