1 min read

Amid economic struggles, people are suffering as basic food becomes unaffordable, says Pas Youth Leader Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden. He adds, “People are languishing, they can’t even eat rice”. He also says to measure the economic condition of a country, it should look at the condition (price and availability) of basic food. He says, previously the government promised that the price of goods could be controlled, but now the opposite is happening.

High-Cost of Goods

Meanwhile, in five months, Malaysia faces a potential white rice shortage due to unpredictable weather and soaring padi seed prices. Climate change impacts have disrupted the farming schedule, with Padi farmers struggling to harvest as planned. A critical shortage of certified seeds, allegedly manipulated by suppliers, has hindered planting, affecting the future rice yield.

Uncertain Rice Supply

Farmers in regions like Kedah and Perlis express concern about the uncertain rice supply. Some farmers claim to have paid above the government-set ceiling price for seeds. Urgent government intervention is urged to monitor seed production and prevent price manipulation for a sustainable rice supply.
