Malaysia’s Ministry of Health reported a rise in HIV cases among men aged 20 to 39, linked to the “You Only Live Once” (YOLO) mentality and global lifestyle influences, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni revealed.

Surveillance data for 2024 showed that men accounted for 90% of HIV cases, with Malays comprising 52%. Despite this, new HIV infections have decreased from 6,978 cases in 2002 to 3,185 cases in 2024.
Social media’s role in connecting high-risk individuals was cited as a contributing factor. Selangor led in reported cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Sabah.
