JAKARTA – Nearly 100 Indonesian demonstrators, including human rights activists and labour unions, hurled eggs at the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta to protest the fatal shooting of an Indonesian national by Malaysian maritime authorities on Jan 24.
The protesters demanded justice, alleging excessive force. Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry called for a thorough investigation, while Malaysia claimed the suspects attacked officers with machetes and rammed their vessel. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urged Malaysians to stay calm, assuring a fair probe. The incident, linked to smuggling syndicates by Malaysian media, remains a source of diplomatic tension.
