As 2026 arrives, Malaysians are debating whether it’s time to raise the value of Ang Pow. A man’s viral Facebook post sparked discussion after his children received only RM2 in red packets from a financially well-off relative. 

RM2 Ang Pow Sparking Debate

He argued the amount was outdated, saying, “It’s not the 90s anymore — you can’t even buy a cup of tea with RM2.” He contrasted this with his own practice of giving at least RM10 per packet. While disappointed by the relative’s gesture, he acknowledged the red packet is ultimately about tradition and goodwill, not investment. Still, many feel values should reflect modern realities.
