GEORGE TOWN, Aug 20, 2026 – DAP has faced continuous political attacks throughout its 18 years of governing Penang but remains committed to building a better future, said Joshua Woo, the party’s state publicity secretary.
Woo noted that despite criticism, Penang has transformed from being derided as “Darul Sampah” to winning the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Award four times consecutively since 2018. He stressed that DAP’s focus has always been on development and serving the people.

Among Penang’s achievements, Woo highlighted cumulative exports of RM2.65 trillion between 2020 and 2025, making the state Malaysia’s largest exporter with 36% of national exports in 2025. GDP per capita rose from RM54,818 in 2020 to RM80,584 in 2025, while approved foreign manufacturing investments reached RM207 billion over the same period.
Median household income also increased from RM6,169 in 2020 to RM7,386 in 2024, with Penang recording the highest compound annual growth rate nationally. In education, the Penang Future Foundation awarded 863 scholarships worth RM47.7 million, while RM53.85 million was allocated to schools between 2023 and 2026.
Woo added that Penang remains inclusive, channeling RM7.46 million to over 200 non-Muslim houses of worship, while federal-backed projects such as the RM17 billion LRT and RM3 billion highway further strengthen the state’s growth.
