KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19, 2026 – Former 1MDB CEO Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi told the High Court that he never treated fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho (Jho Low) as Malaysia’s prime minister, despite communicating with Najib Razak through informal channels involving Low.
Testifying as the fourth witness in 1MDB’s US$5.64 billion civil suit, Shahrol admitted he had relied on Low to relay information to Najib but rejected suggestions that he regarded Low as the country’s leader.

During cross-examination, lawyer G.K. Ganesan, representing former 1MDB investment director Kelvin Tan Kay Jin, pressed Shahrol on whether Najib was informed about disputes over the Serdar oil field project linked to a RM1 billion joint venture. Shahrol said he was unsure if Low had conveyed the matter to Najib.
The suit, filed in May 2021, names Najib and several former 1MDB executives as defendants, accused of breach of trust, abuse of power, and conspiracy to misappropriate funds. 1MDB has since dropped its claims against Radhi Mohamad and Jasmine Loo Ai Swan.
The trial, presided over by Judicial Commissioner Mohamad Redzuan Idrus, resumes tomorrow.
