Hundreds of lawyers marched in Kuala Lumpur today demanding judicial reforms and independence. Chanting “Free the courts” and carrying placards that doubled as shields from the searing sun, the rally paused midway as marshals announced they had reached the halfway point. Malaysian Bar president Ezri Abdul Rahman emphasised that the march was not against any individual but to uphold the principles of justice. “This march is in defence of judicial independence, rooted in law and not politics,” he declared. Ezri warned that failure to act would weaken both the judiciary and democracy. Prominent legal figures were present in solidarity.
