PUTRAJAYA, Sept. 6, 2026 — DAP secretary‑general Loke Siew Fook has dismissed calls for an early general election, stressing that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim retains majority support in Parliament. Speaking after officiating at the DAP Wanita National Congress, Loke said the unity government was formed with a five‑year mandate following GE15, and 15 months remain to implement agreed reforms.

“For DAP, as long as the prime minister has majority support, there is no need to bow to pressure to dissolve Parliament,” he said. Among reforms awaiting passage are constitutional amendments to separate the roles of attorney‑general and public prosecutor, and a two‑term limit for the premiership.

Early GE16

His remarks came after BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi suggested GE16 should be held earlier, though UMNO is prepared if Anwar completes the full term. Anwar himself said the proposal could be considered but emphasized the government’s focus on the economy, public wellbeing, and fighting corruption.

Loke rejected claims that DAP was creating tension by pushing reforms, noting they were part of a shared Cabinet agenda. He added that coalition disagreements were normal, but parties remain committed unless they formally withdraw support.
