New: Ong Kian Ming says 112 seats now possible for ‘blue wave’ led by BN with PAS

Dr. Ong Kian Ming views a potential alliance between UMNO (under Barisan Nasional) and PAS as the defining catalyst for the 16th General Election (GE16). He anticipates that an effective “Malay-Muslim unity” (penyatuan ummah) narrative between the two traditional rivals could spark a decisive “blue wave,” capturing over 112 parliamentary seats in Peninsular Malaysia and sweeping them into power alongside East Malaysian blocs.

However, in the interview with Sinar Harian, Ong highlights critical friction points that could strain this cooperation, particularly in seat distribution. For state elections like Melaka, he predicts UMNO/BN might concede at least four seats to PAS and Perikatan Nasional, expecting seat swaps in return across northern strongholds like Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Perlis. Furthermore, he notes that disputes over Chief Minister (Menteri Besar) candidates in key states such as Pahang, Perak, and Selangor could ignite internal tension between the two parties.

Despite these hurdles, Ong sees UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as the primary Prime Minister candidate in a joint victory. He reasons that even if PAS wins slightly more seats, regional parties in Sabah and Sarawak will favor UMNO leadership to maintain a clear hierarchy and political stability.
