1 min read

Malaysia, through the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI), has contributed seeds to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (SGSV) in Norway. Seeds from traditional rice, eggplant, and long bean varieties were selected as duplicates for long-term storage in the Doomsday Vault.

The vault, built inside a mountain, maintains seeds at -18°C to withstand major disasters. MARDI duplicated 725 plant accessions through two shipments in 2024. On February 26, 2025, seeds from Malaysia and 20 other countries were deposited. This effort ensures the security and availability of genetic food resources in case of disaster.
