PUTRAJAYA, Aug 1, 2026 — The success of five Malaysian women climbers in conquering Mount Elbrus, Russia’s highest peak at 5,642 meters, has showcased the spirit of unity in flying the Jalur Gemilang atop Europe’s tallest mountain.
The climbers — Datin Junaimasriya Othman, 51, Claire George, 48, Asmiah Md Ruslim, 54, Dr Norhayati Abdullah, 46, and Wong Pui Sze, 44 — were accompanied by Nepalese medical officer Dr Abhyu Ghimire, 36. The expedition tested not only physical endurance but also mental resilience, with participants braving extreme cold of minus 16°C and treacherous icy paths.

Claire George, from Ranau, Sabah, described Elbrus as one of her toughest climbs despite previous ascents of Kilimanjaro, Annapurna Circuit, Rinjani, and Fansipan. She emphasized safety over records, recalling a chilling moment when a fellow climber slipped on ice. For her, the greatest achievement was returning safely to family after completing the historic mission.
