SINGAPORE, Oct 9 — A 27-year-old man has been jailed and caned for his role in a violent nightclub brawl that stemmed from a dispute over what he believed was repeated staring by another patron.
Jonathan Soo Wen Jie was sentenced to 18 months’ jail and four strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to causing grievous hurt in an attack that left a Malaysian man with serious facial injuries and lasting vision problems.
Staring Dispute
The incident occurred at Mask 51 nightclub in Geylang on Apr 28, 2025, while Soo was celebrating his wife’s pregnancy with friends. Court documents showed Soo became irritated after noticing the victim looking in the direction of his group several times.
The confrontation quickly escalated into a heated argument before Soo threw the first punch. Three friends then joined the fray as the victim was dragged across the club, thrown against furniture and repeatedly punched and kicked.
Despite not retaliating, the victim was assaulted for nearly two-and-a-half minutes. The violence continued as he attempted to leave, with Soo striking him on the head using a metal bar stool.
The victim suffered severe facial fractures and eye injuries, with blurred vision and pain persisting for months after the attack.
