MANCHESTER, Sept 15 — Refereeing body Pro Ref has admitted a mistake in awarding Erling Haaland’s decisive goal during Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, sparking fresh controversy over VAR decisions in the Premier League.
The striker’s effort was initially ruled offside before VAR overturned the call, deeming Haaland onside due to United defender Patrick Dorgu’s positioning. However, City’s Enzo Fernandez was in an offside position as he attempted to play the ball, with his movement appearing to affect United’s Lisandro Martinez. By the laws of the game, this should have led to the goal being disallowed.
Var error,
In a statement, Pro Ref said VAR “should have recommended an on-field review” and confirmed it had contacted United to acknowledge an “error of judgment.” Sky Sports reported that United received a formal apology.
The incident has reignited debate over VAR’s consistency, with pundit Gary Neville slamming the officials for “getting Haaland wrong.” Critics argue that despite multiple layers of review, technology continues to deliver controversial outcomes, undermining trust in officiating.
The admission adds to mounting pressure on refereeing standards, with calls for clearer protocols and accountability in high-stakes matches.
