MANCHESTER, Sept 14 (Reuters) — Refereeing body Pro Ref admitted that the video assistant referee (VAR) made a mistake in allowing Erling Haaland’s decisive goal during Manchester City’s 1-0 derby win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Haaland’s strike on the hour mark was initially ruled offside but reinstated after a VAR review. Pro Ref later said the VAR failed to consider the impact of teammate Enzo Fernandez, who attempted to head the ball from an offside position.
VAR Error
“The VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review,” the statement read.
Pro Ref confirmed it had contacted Manchester United to acknowledge the error and promised a review of the incident. United manager Michael Carrick expressed frustration, saying he could not understand how multiple layers of officiating still failed to deliver the correct decision.
