The Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) has called on Putrajaya to justify the proposed electricity tariff hike, set to begin July 1, warning it could strain public welfare. MCA deputy president Mah Hang Soon emphasized the need for transparency and careful planning, noting the hike could burden low-income households and small businesses. He cautioned that increased costs might fuel inflation, eroding purchasing power. While supporting green energy goals, Mah urged empathy, suggesting expanded subsidies for the M40 group and support for SMEs. Tenaga Nasional’s new tariff is 45.62 sen/kWh, up from 39.95 sen/kWh under the previous regulatory period.
