MCA to Contest Two Melaka Seats After Meeting Zahid

Wee

MCA will contest two Melaka seats under the Barisan Nasional (BN) ticket after party president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong met BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Wednesday (Oct 28).

Wee told reporters at Wisma MCA that the party’s presidential council had decided to take part in the polls, with MCA fielding candidates in Machap Jaya and Klebang, The Star reported. The two seats are held by MCA assemblymen Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem and Datuk Lim Ban Hong respectively.

Meeting at Parliament

Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, and BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir met Wee at the Parliament building, according to Bernama. The three were seen entering the Members of Parliament Block at about 12.20pm amid a dispute over BN’s candidate announcement for the polls.

Zahid later posted a photograph of himself with the two leaders on Facebook with the caption “Don’t worry. All is well. Kita Geng Biru (We are the Blue Gang).”

Assurance to Chinese: 2 Melaka seats

Wee said MCA had raised concerns over representation after the election, and that Zahid had listened to the party’s views and responded positively, The Star reported.

He said MCA had been given an assurance that the representation of the Chinese community, particularly through the party, “will not be marginalised”.

According to Free Malaysia Today, Wee said MCA would contest under the BN ticket and that the question of using its own logo was no longer relevant. He also said seats the party had previously contested were given to other parties without negotiation.

Wee added that MCA candidates must go through internal selection, be endorsed by the presidential council and sign a loyalty pledge before their names are submitted to BN headquarters.

Walkout over Melaka state election line-up

At BN’s candidate announcement ceremony in Ayer Keroh on Saturday (Oct 24), Wee questioned the event, claiming it was held without MCA’s consent, and said the party did not recognise the list as it had not agreed to it, Bernama reported.

BN allocated MCA two of the 21 seats it is contesting, down from seven in 2021, when the party won Machap Jaya and Klebang, according to The Star.

Nomination is on Saturday (Oct 31), with early voting on Nov 10 and polling on Nov 14.
