Two parties are pushing back against the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) over its move to silence public criticism. Muda vice-president Dobby Chew condemned MCMC for acting like an “internet police force” after it threatened legal action against Pahang MCA Youth leader Wong Siew Mun for questioning its demand for telco user data. Chew reminded MCMC it is “not immune to criticism” in Malaysia. Meanwhile, MCA has enlisted prominent human rights lawyer Edmund Bon to defend Wong, calling MCMC’s demands – including an apology, video removal, and a promise to remain silent – unreasonable and a threat to freedom of speech.
