PKR ex-deputy president Rafizi Ramli has claimed that the political turmoil in Negeri Sembilan, triggered by Umno’s withdrawal of support for Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun, is part of a broader strategy to force a general election by October. Speaking on his podcast Yang Berhenti Menteri, Rafizi said, “The controversy in Negeri Sembilan is Umno’s grand strategy to build a wave of support similar to what happened in the previous Malacca and Johor state elections.”
General Election
He speculated that Umno’s ultimate aim is to pressure Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim into dissolving Parliament. “Using the same strategy now, they want to build a big wave. That will force Anwar to hold an early general election, and Umno will mop up seats all over Malaysia,” Rafizi added.
The plan, he said, involves holding polls in Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, and Johor simultaneously with a federal election. Rafizi warned that the gambit has backfired, tarnishing Umno’s image. He labelled the party a “backdoor party,” arguing that such moves alienate progressive Malay and non-Malay voters.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has since clarified that while the party respects its Negeri Sembilan lawmakers’ stance, Umno continues to support Anwar’s Madani administration.
