KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into former Barisan Nasional strategic communications deputy director Eric See-To, following a Facebook comment alleged to have insulted Islam.
The probe stems from remarks he made about the word “lighad” in Surah al‑Hashr, verse 18, during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Budget 2027 tabling on Oct 9. The comment was accused of mocking the Quran, sparking public outrage.

“SKMM has initiated investigations against an individual following a comment suspected of insulting Islam on Facebook,” the commission said. Investigators have recorded See‑To’s statement and seized his mobile phone and eSIM for forensic analysis.
The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000 or two years’ imprisonment. SKMM stressed that freedom of speech must be exercised responsibly, respecting religious sensitivities and preserving harmony in Malaysia’s multi‑faith society.
Meanwhile, the Barisan Nasional (BN) Deputy Strategic Communications Director Datuk Eric See-To has rejected accusations of insulting the Quran following backlash over his social media commentary on the Arabic word “lighad”.
