KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 — Political commentator Liyana Marzuki has sparked fresh debate on social media after questioning whether political leaders and supporters would respond consistently to allegations involving religious sensitivities regardless of political affiliation.

In a Facebook post titled“Singa atau Kucing”, Liyana said she was often baffled by how some political groups frequently portrayed non-Malay figures as threats to Malay interests, yet readily embraced individuals from those same backgrounds when they supported their political narratives.

Her comments were directed at social media personality Lim Sian See, also known as Eric See-To, who has long been a popular political commentator among supporters of Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional.

Liyana argued that Lim’s comment involving the word “lighad”, which was cited in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Budget 2027 speech through a Quranic verse, should be judged using the same standards applied to political opponents.

The issue escalated after Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh publicly criticised Lim and demanded an open apology. Akmal described the alleged mocking of Quranic verses as excessive and confirmed that a police report would be lodged over the matter.

The controversy stems from comments made by Lim regarding the term “lighad”, which appears in Surah Al-Hasyr, Verse 18 and was referenced during the Budget 2027 presentation. Critics accused him of ridiculing a Quranic reference, while supporters argued the remarks were political in nature.

Lim has denied insulting the Quran, insisting his comments were related to the use of the word in the budget speech and not the religious text itself. He said he was unaware the term was part of a Quranic verse when making the remark.

Liyana, however, framed the issue as a test of consistency, asking whether those who frequently champion Malay and Islamic causes would react as strongly when the controversy involved an individual aligned with their own political camp.
