Among the initiatives announced during the tabling of the 2023 Johor state budget on Thursday were measured to relieve congestion at Johor Bahru’s Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) complex (Dec 1).

More e-gates for Malaysians will be established. These will rise from 14 to 32 units at the entry points and 14 to 26 units at the exit point to ease Causeway congestion

In tabling the budget, Johor chief minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi stated that since the international borders reopened on April 1, an average of 211,000 people have passed through the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI), which houses the CIQ, on a daily basis. He stated that measures will be put in place to alleviate traffic congestion on the Causeway.
