More than RM14 billion in unclaimed money has been recorded by the Accountant General’s Department (JANM) as at September 30, 2026, with many owners apparently unaware that the funds belong to them. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said limited public awareness and a lack of knowledge about the right to claim the money were among the main reasons the amount remained so high. Outdated addresses and telephone numbers have also made it difficult for authorities and organisations to trace the rightful owners.
eGUMIS Portal Allows Malaysians to Check and Claim Forgotten Funds
Amir said some individuals may not realise that companies or other entities still owe them money. To make the process easier, JANM provides the eGUMIS online portal, allowing members of the public to check for unclaimed funds and submit claims without visiting government offices. The initiative is also intended to improve access for people living in rural areas.
JANM is expanding its public awareness efforts to encourage more claims. As of October 30, it had conducted 176 unclaimed-money information booths nationwide, compared with 89 throughout the previous year. Malaysians are encouraged to check the official portal rather than rely on third-party agents.
