PKR lawmaker Wong Chen advocates for higher MP salaries/allowances, arguing it ensures effective governance. He highlights financial burdens beyond family support, emphasizing political expenses and staff costs. He urges a “carrot and stick” policy approach to improve efficiency and accountability in policy making.
Netizens say MPs DON’T need higher allowances as they’re earning 20x more than min wage
Social media users were unhappy after reading up about this. An X user states that MPs are earning 20x more than the current minimum wage of RM1,700. The average salary of an MP is around RM25,000 a month, and that is technically slightly more than 20 times than the minimum wage.
Others added that most Malaysians earn below RM5,000 a month, and that these politicians should wonder how the average Malaysians, their voters, live on much less than RM20,000 a month.
