Malaysia Showcases Locally Grown Avocados Amid SST Tax Debate

The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry distributed 300 Tawau-grown Borneocado avocados to MPs and media in Parliament to promote local produce. Grown by Top Borneo Sdn Bhd, the QAV1 variety was developed over 10 years at Bukit Quion Agricultural Research Station and is known for its thick flesh, small seed, and creamy, sweet taste.

With a yield of up to 200 fruits per tree, it matures within 3–4 years and thrives in tropical climates. This comes amid public debate over SST expansion on imported fruits like avocados. Local avocados are tax-exempt, and Borneocado aims to boost supply for domestic and global markets.
