Malaysia’s MyKiosk project, launched in 2023 with a RM150 million investment, provides street hawkers with modern, solar-powered kiosks featuring LED lights and lockable doors to operate legally in hygienic, strategic locations. One hawker in a new kiosk reports improved nasi kandar sales, paying a reasonable RM120 monthly rent, though earnings are still stabilizing compared to his previous RM500 daily takings. The initiative, led by Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, aims to support small traders, many of whom previously operated in unregulated roadside setups. While the public largely supports the cleaner street food scene, some hawkers criticize low customer traffic, reduced earnings at certain locations, and unreliable utilities, noting that the solar panels only provide about four hours of evening power.
