KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 – Consumer and environmental groups have urged Malaysia not to rush into adopting nuclear power without addressing critical issues of cost, safety, waste management, foreign dependency and accountability. Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations CEO Dr Saravanan Thambirajah said nuclear energy is not just an electricity project but a long‑term national commitment involving governance, financing, and public confidence. He stressed that consumers deserve transparency on who bears the costs and how radioactive waste will be managed.
Nuclear Push
Saravanan noted nuclear reactors provide stable baseload electricity but warned they require high upfront investments, lengthy construction, specialised workforce development, and long‑term waste management. Sahabat Alam Malaysia president Meena Raman added nuclear power is inherently unsafe, vulnerable to disasters and sabotage, and would make Malaysia dependent on foreign technology. She argued renewable energy and efficiency measures offer cheaper, safer, and more sustainable pathways to reduce carbon emissions.
