KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23, 2026 — Former prime minister Najib Razak’s decision to crowdfund RM50 million to pay his conditional house arrest fine has triggered intense debate across Malaysia.

Supporters argue the move reflects solidarity, with UMNO leaders urging donations to help Najib comply with the pardon terms. Within hours of launch, the fund reportedly collected over RM600,000, mostly in small sums of RM10–RM50. Najib’s lawyers explained that much of his wealth remains frozen, making public fundraising necessary.

Critics, however, view the campaign as tone‑deaf.
