New Zealand Football (NZF) has reached out to FIFA regarding player protection and addressing racism following the men’s national team’s decision to abandon a friendly match against Qatar.
New Zealand Football accusing Qatar players to be racist
The protest occurred due to an alleged racist slur directed at New Zealand’s Michael Boxall, prompting the team to take a stand when no official action was taken. This incident is one of two matches abandoned in Austria due to racism allegations. NZF’s CEO expressed the need for stronger measures to safeguard players from racial attacks on the field.
Qatar’s coach stood by their player, stating that the matter should be handled by football authorities. NZF aims to investigate the match officials’ lack of action, raising concerns about existing rules. The Qatar and Ireland Football Associations also plan to contact FIFA and UEFA respectively to address racism.
FIFA maintains a zero-tolerance policy against discrimination, with President Gianni Infantino advocating for halting matches in cases of discrimination. Qatar’s coach stood by their player, stating that the matter should be handled by football authorities.
