A recent study by the Hainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences has revealed significant nutritional differences between durians grown in China and those from Southeast Asia. Chinese-grown Monthong durians lacked the antioxidant quercetin found in their Thai counterparts in high amounts. The Kan Yao variety in China contained quercetin at levels 520 times lower than imported ones. Similarly, gallic acid, an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties, was detected in much lower levels in Chinese durians. Researchers attribute these differences to variations in climate, soil minerals, and nutrients, which affect the fruit’s growth process and nutritional composition.
