New: Pink, gaseous influent likely caused Penang sewer line blast, says IWK

1 min read

PETALING JAYA, June 7, 2025 – A pink, gaseous influent is suspected to have triggered an underground explosion near a sewer line in Lengkok Perindustrian Bukit Minyak, Bukit Mertajam, Penang, on Friday, June 6, according to Indah Water Konsortium (IWK). The national sewerage company’s preliminary probe points to an illegal chemical discharge from a nearby factory. IWK has alerted the Environment Department and the National Water Services Commission for help in tracing the source. Despite a displaced manhole cover and damage to a road culvert, the sewer network is functioning normally. No injuries were reported. Repairs and a CCTV inspection are planned. – Photo: Lumi
